(1)  Job Title: Police Chief                                                                         City of Barnwell, SC

FLSA Status - Exempt

Summary: Directs, plans, manages, and coordinates activities and operations of the City of Barnwell Police Department by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors, coordinated with assigned activities with the City Administrator.

Develops, plans, and implements police department goals, objectives, rules, regulations, and work methods that comply with federal, state, and local laws and in response to assessment of community needs.

Establishes, within policy guidelines, appropriate service and staffing levels.

Coordinates, administers, and monitors police activities, personnel, and programs.

Provides consultation and staff assistance to city administrator, city council, and other governmental officials.

Supervises and participates in the development and administration of the police department budget.

Directs the selection, supervision, training, development, and discipline of department personnel.

Directs investigation of citizen complaints regarding officer misconduct or other alleged wrongdoing.

Meets with a variety of community organizations to promote department activities and develop positive community relations.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

High School Diploma; college degree or technical degree is preferred; successfully graduated from the police academy; minimum of 5 years law enforcement experience required.

Current SC Driver's License or ability to receive one (for out of state applicants).  Must pass all appropriate background and drug screenings. 

Must be available for call nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. 

The City of Barnwell is a member of the SC State (PORS) Retirement System; other benefits including insurance included.  Competitive salary based on experience and budget is negotiable.

(2)  Police Officer  - City of Barnwell

Category:  Police

Position hours: FT – shift schedule

Job Duties:

  • Patrols assigned area on foot or in patrol car to enforce laws, prevent and discover crimes, investigate crimes, maintain order, and answer calls and complaints
  • Investigates causes and results of accidents
  • Issues written citations for traffic and other minor violations.

Qualifications:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Pass a thorough Background Investigation and pre-employment drug screen & physical
  • Current South Carolina Law Enforcement certification is preferred but not required
